business, the cheesecake factory inc., workforce development,
In March 2006‚ The Cheesecake Factory Inc. opened its second production site‚ and the only one on the east coast. The new Rocky Mount facility brought 75 jobs initially and will eventually employ 300 to 500 workers‚ says company official Robert Michalski.
The 100‚000-square-foot plant sits on a 16-acre site and was built at a cost of $15 million with an additional $1 million in pre-opening investments. The workers produce cheesecake and other bakery products for the company’s restaurants and other food-service wholesalers.
“The Cheesecake Factory began as a mom-and-pop operation in California‚” Michalski says. “Today‚ the company operates over 100 restaurants‚ and our bakeries produce over 50 varieties of cheesecake and other baked products for our restaurants and for retail and wholesale distributors. We have 20-plus more restaurants in the planning stages.”
Officials at the city of Rocky Mount‚ Nash County and the Carolinas Gateway Partnership worked together on incentives to bring the Cheesecake Factory’s new plant into the area. Cheesecake Factory officials have called Rocky Mount an “ideal” location.
