Tarrytown Mall Makes Way for New Retail Development

Built in 1963‚ Tarrytown Mall was one of the first enclosed shopping malls in North Carolina. In 1999‚ the floods of Hurricane Floyd destroyed it‚ and its remains long stood as a tangible reminder of that disaster.
But not anymore. Work is under way on a Sam’s Club that will become the centerpiece of a $25 million redevelopment of the 29-acre site. In addition to Sam’s‚ the property includes five out-parcels for other businesses.
The City of Rocky Mount and the Rocky Mount Area Chamber of Commerce have been working together on this project from the beginning‚ according to Alan Matthews‚ director of the Chamber’s Office of Business Recruitment.
The new development is expected to create 350 jobs‚ with at least 175 of those at Sam’s Club. The low-cost retailer is expected to inject $72 million into the local economy and bring consumers from a 40-mile radius‚ adding to Rocky Mount’s reputation as a center of commerce for a five-county region.
